chrmpteam March 6, 2023

Background checks or Background Investigation is a process through which an organisation finds its best

candidate by authenticating their criminal, education and employment history, civil records, references, etc.

The process is initiated from the verification of the content of the resume & application blank.

Purpose & Relevance of Background Verification:

  1. It helps to make sure that applicants can do what they claim they can. (through employment and education verification)
  2. It also verifies that applicants are who, they claim to be and aren’t wanted. (through criminal
  3. verification & court records check)
  4. It helps in keeping an organisation’s clients, employees and business safe.
  5. Lack of background checks, or poorly done background checks, can prove detrimental to an organisation’s overall well-being &could lead to horrific crimes.

Background Verification Criteria:

Final decision making related to the hiring of a candidate/participant is dependent upon the results of the background verification process. (conducted for two sets of criteria’s)

  1. The first category is known as Critical Criterion that includes areas like Education Qualification,
  2. Additional Qualification, and Employment Records & Medical Fitness of the candidate. It is mandatory to get a positive result of the verification conducted for the criteria mentioned above.
  3. The second category of criteria is known as General Criterion that consists of Conduct, Achievements, Family Background, Relationship, and Reliable Status. These are considered as mild criteria’s, which indicates that the result of the verification conducted for them would not affect the employability status of the candidate.

Reports related to Background Verification:

  1. Red Reports: These reports are related to candidates who’s both critical and general criteria have failed to get verified. Such candidates would not get hired.
  2. Yellow Reports: These reports are related to candidates whose critical criteria have been verified, but general criteria have failed to get verified. Such candidates would be kept on hold, and their hiring will depend upon the decision of HR and the backup candidates for hire.
  3. Green Reports: These reports are related to candidates who’s both critical and general criteria have been verified. Such candidates would be hired immediately.
  4. Amber Reports: These reports are related to those candidates who had backlogs in their education, and the backlogs have been verified.
